------------------UPDATE 4----------------

* Further to our previous advices, the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department declared the fire on board HOEGH XIAMEN to be officially out on 12 June 2020, after having burnt since 4 June 2020.

* Efforts are now expected to be focused on salvaging the vessel and the remains of cargo stowed on board the vessel.

* It is not currently clear whether any cargo on board the vessel will retain any salvage value, but it is likely that cargo insurers will be faced with claims for total loss of all cargo on board the vessel.

* We have cargo surveyors on hand to investigate the cause of the fire and are ready to assist with any recovery issues arising as a result of this fire.

* We recommend that you contact us urgently if you are concerned with any cargo on board this vessel so that we can immediately start taking steps to protect your interests.

------------------UPDATE 3-----------------

* Further to our previous advices, it is reported that the fire on board HOEGH XIAMEN continues to burn.

* Temperatures inside the hull are reported to have exceeded 1000° Fahrenheit. Those temperatures are sufficient to melt the aluminium and body panels of the vehicles stowed on board.

* In view of the immense temperatures generated by the fire, fire fighters are restricting their efforts to controlling the temperature of the vessel's outer hull whilst allowing the fire inside the vessel to burn itself out. The local fire service is currently deploying drones to monitor the hottest areas of the hull to deploy fire fighting water to the best effect to prevent the vessel's hull from becoming distorted and potentially sinking.

* Under the circumstances it seems increasingly likely that there will be no salvageable cargo on board the vessel once the fire burns itself out and insurers may therefore be faced with claims for total loss of the cargo.

* We continue to have surveyors on hand to investigate the cause of the fire and we remain ready to assist with recovery aspects which will now be the primary focus.

* Please contact us urgently if you are concerned with any cargo on board this vessel so that we can immediately start taking steps to protect your interests.

------------------UPDATE 2------------------

* It is now reported that salvors, Resolve Salvage, were contracted by shipowners to provide salvage assistance to HOEGH XIAMEN on LOF terms with the SCOPIC clause both incorporated and invoked. This seemingly followed the initial response by Resolve Marine as the pre-contracted emergency responder pursuant to the requirements of US law.

* In light of this, it now seems more likely that any salved cargo will be required to provide salvage security from a source in the UK at or prior to the termination of salvage services. W K Webster may be able to assist in that regard as security provided by WKW is acceptable to the Council of Lloyds and is a widely preferred option by professional salvors.

* In addition, if General Average is declared, General Average security may be required from all Cargo Interests and we are also likely to be able to assist in that regard.

* It is important that any security demanded is provided only in respect of the salved residual value of any cargo. Given the reported severity of the fire on board, a good proportion of the cargo may well have been badly affected and we therefore have cargo surveyors on hand to ascertain the cause and extent of damage to any salved cargo at the appropriate time.

* Any such investigations will of course also be relevant to recovery issues in respect of which we also stand ready to assist.

* Please contact us urgently if you are concerned with any cargo on board this vessel so that we can immediately start taking steps to protect your interests.

------------------UPDATE 1------------------

Further to our previous Casualty Advice, the fire on board HOEGH XIAMEN continues to burn.

It is reported that the fire, which first ignited on the 7th deck of the vessel now extends from the 6th deck to the 11th deck. Temperatures at the peak of the fire are said to have reached 500° Centigrade.

Professional salvors have now been contracted to combat the fire and it is reported that fire fighting efforts are now concentrated on providing cooling to the vessel to prevent the vessel from breaking up whilst allowing the fire to burn itself out. A number of firefighters have been injured in their efforts.

We are uniquely placed to assist Cargo Insurers with regard to all aspects of this casualty.

It is possible that salved cargo interests will required to provide salvage security prior to the termination of the salvage services.

In addition, if General Average is declared, General Average security may be required from any salved Cargo Interests prior to the release of their cargo.

We are likely to be able to assist with the provision of any GA and Salvage security demanded and we are currently liaising with the relevant parties as to the provision of security.

We have local cargo surveyors on hand to ascertain the extent of damage to cargo stowed on board the vessel and would be able to assist in regard to any Recovery issues arising from the fire.

We recommend that you contact us urgently if you are concerned with any cargo on board this vessel so that we can immediately start taking steps to protect your interests.
