* We have received the following updated information concerning the engine failure on fully cellular container vessel, MAERSK EUREKA:

* It is now reported that the main engine of MAERSK EUREKA was stopped on 12 March 2021 to replace a damaged fuel pump. The vessel was able to resume its voyage the following day, but the main engine had to be stopped again on 14 March to perform further investigations.

* It was discovered that further repairs to the main engine were necessary and a service technician, crew and spares were deployed by tug from Dutch Harbour, Unalaska on 25 March. The tug was expected to reach MAERSK EUREKA on or about 28 March. Repairs to the vessel are expected to continue until 31 March, whereafter the vessel may resume its voyage to Long Beach, USA with a delayed arrival time of between 15 - 20 days.

* The vessel was last reported to have been drifting in a position approximately 610 nautical miles south of Unalaska on 25 March and the vessel and cargo on board were reported to be intact and secure and power was being maintained to temperature controlled containers at that time.

* Nevertheless, it is possible that deterioration to temperature sensitive cargo and/or contractual issues in respect of time sensitive cargo may arise as a consequence of the prolongation of the voyage and General Average issues may arise as a result of the extraordinary expenses incurred by owners as a result of the casualty.

* If General Average is declared, General Average security may be required from all Cargo Interests prior to the delivery of their cargo and we are likely to be able to assist.

* We therefore recommend that you contact us if you are concerned with any cargo on board this vessel and you require our assistance.


* It is reported that fully cellular container vessel, MAERSK EUREKA, experienced a fuel pump breakdown on or about 11 March 2021, as a consequence of which the vessel has been unable to restore stable main engine propulsion.

* The vessel is reported to have departed Yokohama, Japan, on 6 March 2021 with an ETA at Long Beach, USA of 21 March 2021, but since the breakdown it has been proceeding with reduced/alternating speed.

* It is now reported that the vessel is "Not Under Command", drifting or moving northwards at slow speed, in a position some distance south of Unalaska, Aleutian Islands.

* It is possible that the vessel may need to be taken under tow to a port of refuge. If so, it is possible that General Average and/or Salvage issues may arise. If that transpires, W K Webster may be able to assist with the provision of Salvage and/or General Average security.

* It is also possible that Recovery issues may arise in relation to the delay in delivery of temperature and/or time sensitive cargo as a consequence of the prolongation of the voyage and W K Webster may also be able to assist in that regard.

* We are closely monitoring the progress of the vessel and will report further as further information becomes known.

* In the meantime, we recommend that you contact us if you are concerned with any cargo on board this vessel so that we may immediately start taking steps to protect your interests.
